Finance & Accounting Recruiters — CFO and Controller Search

The seat that tells an owner what the business is actually doing. Clover Search Group is an owner-led direct hire recruiting firm in Lodi, California.

Clover Search Group is an owner-led direct hire recruiting firm in Lodi, California, and finance and accounting is one of the six practice areas we run. On the employers page it is listed as Finance & Administration; in practice it is CFOs, controllers, accounting managers and the senior professionals underneath them, placed permanently with employers across the Central Valley, the Sacramento corridor and the inland Bay Area. Brooklyn and Aidan Kearney own the firm and run the searches themselves.

If you searched for a CFO recruiter, an accounting headhunter or an executive search firm for a finance seat, this is the same work under a different name: direct hire recruiting, permanent employees on your payroll.

Finance is the practice where a bad hire is quietest and most expensive. A controller who cannot close the month does not fail visibly in week two; it shows up as a covenant conversation in month nine. That is why this desk runs slower at intake and harder on references than the others, and why Aidan makes the reference calls himself.

Grouped by where they sit, because the level changes the search. An accounting manager is a market search; a CFO is a conversation with eight people who were not looking.

Leadership. The seats an owner or a board hires, usually retained or exclusive.

Manager. The layer that actually closes the books and owns the forecast.

Senior professional. Individual contributors with real ownership of a function.

Two shapes come up more than any others out here. The first is a family-held manufacturer, grower or distributor whose controller is retiring after twenty years and who has no succession plan, because there was never anyone to succeed to. The second is a company that has outgrown its bookkeeper and needs a first real finance leader — someone who can build a close calendar, talk to a bank, and tell the owner something he does not want to hear.

The administration half of the practice travels with it — human resources director, HR manager and office manager seats at companies small enough that finance and HR report to the same person. We place those when they sit at the leadership or professional layer, and we say so plainly when they do not.

Sacramento. The deepest finance bench in our footprint, and the one market where a CFO search has real competition. Public-sector finance, health care administration, technology and professional services all hire here, and the candidates move between them. It is also where the phrase “CFO recruiter” gets typed into Google most often in this corridor, which is part of why this page exists.

Stockton. San Joaquin County still has banks headquartered inside it — Bank of Stockton has run on its original 1867 charter, and Farmers & Merchants has been in Lodi since 1916 — and that produces a supply of commercial credit, treasury and controller talent the rest of the Valley quietly hires from. Distribution and food processing companies here run real cost accounting functions, which is a different skill from general ledger work and worth screening for on purpose.

Lodi. Home ground, and the clearest example of the succession problem. Winegrowing, food and beverage processing and precision manufacturing are full of closely held companies where the finance function is one person deep. When that person retires, the search is less about technical accounting than about whether the new hire can sit across a table from an owner and be trusted.

The practice does not stop at those three. Every market we cover has finance seats in it, and the hub is the fastest way to see how the corridors connect.

Four stops between the first call and a signed offer — no black box, no surprises. The long version, with the road art, is on the employers page.

Intake

For a finance seat we want the close calendar, the systems, the reporting package and an honest answer about what the last person could not do. We come to you before we start. Recruiting begins when the engagement letter is signed. Not before.

Sourcing

Owner-led outreach across the corridors, not job-board scraping. Phone first — inboxes are noise, and a call gets a real conversation. The people worth hiring usually aren’t looking. They still pick up.

The shortlist

A handful of vetted, genuinely interested candidates — days, not weeks. A phone screen, then a video or in-person interview. Reference checks run by Aidan personally.

The placement

We stay in it through the offer, the move and the first 90 days. Every hire is guaranteed for 90 days, and we check in with both sides after the start date to make sure it is actually working.

What these seats pay. We do not publish compensation on this page, because a range without its market and its percentile is a number that misleads. The 2026 Central Valley Salary Guide carries BLS-sourced ranges for finance and accounting roles across five areas — read the Finance & Administration tables before you set the number. The full fee and engagement picture is on the employers page.

What does a CFO or controller search cost?

Most finance searches run contingent: one fee, payable when the hire starts, backed by a 90-day replacement guarantee. No retainer, no upfront commitment, no tiered price sheet. Retained engagements are structured differently, with part of the fee paid up front. We put the number in front of you on the first call.

Should a finance search run contingent or retained?

Roughly at the controller line. A staff-level or manager-level accounting seat is a contingent search almost every time. A CFO, a VP of Finance or a first finance hire for an owner who has never had one is usually retained or exclusive, because those searches need a defined shortlist date and a candidate pool nobody is racing us for.

How long does a finance or accounting search take?

We do not publish an average, because the honest answer depends on the seat and on how fast you can interview. What we will commit to is the shape of it: a shortlist of vetted, genuinely interested candidates in days rather than weeks, and a straight answer at intake about whether the role is realistic in this market at the number you have in mind.

What happens if the hire does not work out?

Every hire is guaranteed for 90 days. If it comes apart inside that window, we run the search again. We also check in with both sides after the start date rather than waiting to hear that something went wrong, because most finance hires that fail do it quietly in the first month, not loudly in the third.

Do you do executive search for finance leadership?

Yes. CFO, VP of Finance and corporate controller work runs as retained or exclusive executive search, with part of the fee paid up front and a defined shortlist date. Below that line we run the same discipline on a contingent basis. Either way it is direct hire — a permanent employee on your payroll.

If you are a controller or a finance leader in the Valley, you have probably not updated a résumé since the job before this one. That is exactly who we call. There is no cost to candidates, ever, the conversation is confidential, and nothing goes to an employer without your say-so — which matters more in finance than in most functions, because your current employer would notice. We call. You hire.

Fifteen minutes on the phone — the seat, the market, and whether we’re the right fit. No pitch deck.
